Sketchbook

Below is a series of ‘paper productions’ and class projects. None of these productions were fully realized past the design stage. Below them, you can find some of my process sketches and illustration work.

With Bizet’s classic opera “Carmen”, I took a more historical approach, researching the time period as well as playing with textures and patterns from the mix of cultures at play.

Continuing with Bizet’s opera, I was asked to imagine it as a dance piece. With a dance background, I was eager for this experimental project. I focused on free-flowing fabric, embroidery detail, and sticking with a red, white, gray, and black aesthetic for the principals. I even changed the ending, having the dark spirit of Carmen overcome her and stab Don Jose instead of the other way around.

Taking a completely wild turn with Moliere’s “The Imaginary Invalid”, I pushed myself to design out of my comfort zone and get a little weird with it. Borrowing from a ‘clowncore’ aesthetic, I designed the characters of this French play with commedia del’arte archetypes in mind, borrowing the graphic shapes and colors from the forms.
